Book Review #5 - We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

Assalamualaikum wbt and hello everyone!

Yes people, another book review. I can't promise a good review (cause I'm still learning since forever *sob*). One thing I know, the book IS superbly great. (and great is subjective so yeah, whatever.)

I hope you're gonna like it. I've literally taken a very long time to move on from this book because it is so devastating. My heart breaks when the truth was revealed by the end of it. It hurts. (haaaa I might come up with some spoilers.) So yeah, let's start already.

Presenting, We Were Liars; A review by Farzanaley. *flips tudung* Bear with me people!

Book Review #5 - We Were Liars (E. Lockhart) a review by Farzanaley.

I finished it in a day. But it took me almost a week to start reading another book. T_T

Here comes.

We were liars is a story about a group of teenagers; Cadence, Mirren, Johnny and Gat, and how the four of them spent their holidays in their own family island-- The Sinclairs.

POV - We see everything through Cadence's eyes. First person POV. How she see and feel everything, especially after she lost her memory due to the tragic accident.

Settings - Cadence meet her cousins every summer holidays. Something that we really anticipate for.
Especially that it's spent mostly with her cousins of her age. It's summer vacation, what more does she need?

Characters:

Cadence - Oh young lady, how do I explain you? A proper girl. Lives in a broken family. Her mother is part of The Sinclairs. Her father left. Lost her memories after the awful accident.

Johnny - Cousin. His mother is also part of The Sinclairs. He has the typical young teenage boy character. Relaxed and caring, like a brother to Cadence.

Mirren - Cousin. More like a sister from another mother. Mirren's mother is also one of the Sinclairs. She's the person Cadence would seek and talk about her life because she'll definitely be there for her.

Gat - a Friend. Could've been a boyfriend to Cadence. Until Grandfather conveyed that he refused to accept people of different class in the family.

Plot/Story-line-

Summer vacation in The Sinclairs' private island has always been on the list. However, meeting Gat was not. Cadence first met him when Johnny brought him during one of their holidays. Gat has always been showing the other side of himself when he's with her. He wanted a lot of things. Changes. He has big dreams, and those are the ones that kept him alive.

Gat was a friend. While they were cousins. Their mothers were siblings. The mothers kept quarreling over their Grandfather's property. The young cousins were sick of it. They wanted it to stop.

Who would know that during one of those holidays, a very unfortunate event happened. Cadence lost her memories. Everything looked and felt foreign. Everyone stopped fighting.

Cadence felt like the victory was theirs. They've gained some. Nevertheless, she knew it wasn't it. She felt empty; not knowing what they've lost.

*wow I might not be good at reviews but hell yeah I'm good at creating suspense out of it! (hahahaha okay ignore me).

As I've written above, the book torn my heart into pieces, moved me into tears (which I've never done when I usually read before) and definitely tortured my mind until today.

To put it laconically, all you've gotta do is to read it. If all of my fingers were thumbs, then E. Lockhart would've gotten 20 thumbs up from me. That's how amazing the book is, to me personally.

Thanks for reading!

Book Review #3: East of The Sun by Julia Gregson

Hallu everyone!

My first post of 2015 would be another review. Prolly because it's been awhile since I update my blog and also read a novel!

Im kinda pissed of with myself for not doing em but well, I guess I kinda filled up my days with other social sites so yeap, that would be the excuse.

The book was bought by my friend when she went to the super-sale Big Bad Wolf in Malaysia, somewhere in Shah Alam? Was it? Well I dont care how it was bought. Funny thing about a book is that, we shouldnt judge it from its cover right?

Well I do believe in that quote but with books, I tend to look for simple covers. LIKE plain ones with words only. Idk why. It's just that Im more attracted to them. So, BELIEVE me, if my friend Saff didnt buy it for me (cause she's pretty artistic and she sees book covers differently as how I do), I might not read it and write a review today!

Taken from google. My phone is charging. Cant take the photo of the book rn. But this is exactly the cover of the book.

Now, let's move on to the review :)

Lemme make things clear with the books I read. I love books that bring me to another place. I dont care whether these places are real or fictional for as long as they're somewhere that Ive never been to before.

With East of The Sun, Julia Gregson made me experience the life of people who sail on big ships (like Titanic yknowwww), and she brought me to India!

I love all the characters and to make sure that I won't give you the spoilers, Im only gonna share a lil about the characters :3

Viva Holloway : the main lady. the first few pages made me kinda fear her character. she was a fraud. well, sorta~ but you gotta read to know more. ;3

Rose : oh she's sooooo fragile. seriously naive. but as the story goes on, I really love seeing her character develops.

Victoria : one hell of a girl. kinda laid back but desperate in a way. she developed nicely as much as Rose did too! (did I tell you guys that Rose & Victoria are cousins?)

Glover : oh this boy. I love his character. Really. because at first I like him, and even till the end, I do. I just think that he's such a pitiful young boy :(

This story is about how Viva lied how she knew India so that she got paid to become Rose and Voctoria's chaperone along their trip to India. Rose is getting married to an Englishman who stays in India, while Victoria is her bridesmaid.

In their journey, they learned about each other a lot. They met guys. They were in India. They met new people. They (and I) learned the culture, A LOT.

And you'll have to read it to experience what I went through. It's a good catch. It made me feel like going to India like right NOW!

Always a proud reader :)

Thank you Julia Gregson for a great journey. Glad that I was able to experience them (altho in my mind ;) )

Thanks for reading!

Book Review #1: Being Friends with Boys - Terra Elan McVoy by Farzanaley

Assalamualaikum wbt and hello thereeee :D

It's been a while since I wrote my last post (and I guess this sounds very annoying because Ive been using the exact same sentence to start my post). Well hello, whatever. I guess Im pretty excited to write today. First, obviously because it's been a while. Secondly, hey, Ive got a thing to talk about! Woohooo. Well it's not like I didnt have anything to talk about before but I just did not put the effort to even write one because Im not sure whether my post would be beneficial or just another pose of me rambling things.

So yeah. Let's get things started. I'm a beginner at these things so please tell me if there's some that I do wrong ;3 One more thing, I'm the type of person who would sometimes tell too much till you kinda get the spoiler and you need not read the novel anymore~ BUT, I promise I won't do it by the end of this post. Trust me :D

One more thing, writing a book review has always been an idea that my friends put into my head. It's just that I was lazy.......... so yeah, while now Im making effort, you better read, people! Ahah XD

Book Review #1: Being Friends with Boys - Terra Elan McVoy
Hahaha this is the photo I took and posted it on my Instagram xP
I'm not pretty much sure on how to start (told ya Im new), but surely I would give you the summary written at the back of the book :)

"Charlotte and Oliver have been friends forever. She knows that he, Abe and Trip consider her to be one of the gang, and she likes it that way. She likes being the friend who keeps them all together. Likes offering a girl's perspective on their love lives. Likes being the behind-the-scenes wordsmith who writes all the lyrics for the boys' band. Char has a house full of stepsisters and a past full of backstabbling (female) ex-best friends, so for her, being friends with boys is refreshingly drama-free... until it isn't anymore.
When a new boy enters the scene and makes Char feel like, well, a total girl... and two of her other friends have a falling out that may or may not be related to one of them deciding he possibly wants to be more than friends with Char... being friends with all these boys suddenly becomes a lot more complicated."

And that, my friends, is what written at the back of the book.

Honestly, the moment I finished the book, I would say, hell no the summary is confusing because truthfully, there isn't only one new guy that entered the scene after Trip decided to leave the band they're in, but two of them.

Yes, one of them, is Fabian - the hot new guy in band. He's there, nice and made things real awkward that Char had to control and act cool all the time he was there. We could all tell that he's the new guy that made Char swoon like a girl.

However, the new guy that made one of her guy friends' said wanted to be "more than friends" with Char was Benji. Here comes Benji, another new guy who was always there for her to rescue her failing 20 Cen.(subject). He was not in the band, but he was there with Char.

The start was diff with these two. The way I explained it made it sound like it's just a love story. WAIT, NO. Remember the title? "being friends with boys", How did it all start anyway?

So, let's all move on to Char.

Char is the girl in the story, she's the one who's being friends with all these boys in the story. It's not like she hates girls, she used to have one, Lish. But not sure how things happened when they were suddenly not friends anymore.

And it's not like she had a terrible life either. One might say that she lives in a broken family because her parents are divorced, but honestly, her stepmom, Hannah wasn't all bad either. She isn't a modern Cinderella, she got two terrific stepsisters (Gretchen and Darcy) and they were always there when Jill (her real sister) wasn't there.

I honestly like this novel for its purity. The author, Terra wan't trying to make Char sounded pathetic at all. She does have the inner side of girly things in her, despite her spending most of the time with her boy friends, she does want to put some make up when she went out with Fabian, and dress up prettily (with some limits still since she never really dress up).

So Im not sure how I should end this hahaha.

Im afraid, if I talk more, Im gonna spill everything hahaha. However, lemme give tell you what occured in my head when I was reading through it.

Since she surely will end up with someone too, I put (or would honestly call it as rate) these guys on my list:

1. Fabian (because for God's sake, she dressed up for him!)

2. Benji (she's been hanging out with him, he's nice, funny and she's all comfortable with him and his jokes. He also lends her his notes and they helped her with her study!)

3. Oliver (just because. well yknow, Oliver and her has been friends for like years. they're close! so, I guess, who knows? It might be the one who's always there. It's just Char or even Oliver himself can't see it that they might are meant for each other. They might be more than just friends?)

4. Trip (just the same reason why I would rate Oliver. but I put him last because he left the band. so... I wasnt sure. however, she's all comfortable with him. they exchange opinions/stories; on life rather than study in one notebook that only they read during class. she thought about him a lot is the reason I put him in this rating list.)

And of course, the rating list I made was just my PERSONAL OPINION. I repeat, they're all personal as I read through the story and it didn't end as how I rate it at all. Im all in with Benji because he's nice but well, you've gotta read it man! Hahaha

It's all good. Not that I don't like this kind of genre, it's just that I rarely picked one. So now that I have finally read one, I think it would be good to read a lot more on any kinds of genres.

So I believe, there goes my book review. My first book review, by Terra Elan McAvoy, Being Friends With Boys.

I don't like rating books. They're good on their own. The beauty of a story is subjective. Therefore, have fun reading! :D It's not a heavy story, rather a light and relaxing one. :)
